He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.” And the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together.” When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
Comment: I think that the Israeli side of this potential war could agree that if they could have single handed combat and win the fight it would be a blessing. But no one was prepared to be the combatant.
Isaiah (Isaiah ch 6) heard God say ‘whom can I send and who will go for me?’. He said ‘here am I’, was sent and had an extraordinarily difficult (but productive) ministry, which ended up by his being martyred. Would there be someone this day who would accept the challenge?
Prayer: Again I pray for courage to be what you want me to be, O Lord!
Thank you Barry for your comments. I think my knees would have been knocking if I had been there that day!!! I really don’t think I would have been brave enough to do anything except flee in the opposite direction. Obviously King Saul and his army were all feeling the same, and no-one was willing to fight Goliath. Their morale was at a very low level. God bless you.
