Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,
and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Comment: ‘Anthropomorphise’ is a long word, fundamentality meaning attributing human characteristics to something non-human, and dictionaries mention doing it to animals or gods. God is Spirit (In Genesis we know that he breathed life into clay making man a living creation), does this mean that He has the same emotions as us? Jesus (God, the Son) was a man and, as a man, ascended into heaven. I don’t understand it all but it seems that we have every reason to give God ‘human characteristics, which are what He gave us at any rate! So this passage uses verbs the meaning of which all we humans understand.
He delights in truth; He teaches wisdom; He purges, cleanses – to a spectacular degree; He breaks what offends Him; He covers over (blots out having hidden); He corrects (cleansing and renewing); He can bring tragedy (casting someone away by taking His presence from); He can restore and sustain.
And David pleads not to be rejected but restored!
Prayer: I need Your gracious act on me, O Father who hears.
