Proverbs 1: 1-7….The beginning!

The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing,in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth—
Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

According to an English proverb a rider can take a horse to water, but cannot make it drink. According to the Ethiopian (similar) proverb a horse can take a soldier to war but cannot make him fight. Thinking of myself, I sometimes see myself as the horse, sometimes as the rider, sometimes as the soldier. At any rate my purpose is to help us to think. But the book of Proverbs in the Bible are collected to guide us in living before and for God.

It is almost three years since I began writing this daily thought or devotional. Some have very graciously followed with me all that time, I sometimes get messages from new people starting. I intend to continue while I am able. A truth can be absolute and yet have many facets. One of my delights in reading the Bible is that it stretches my mind, fills me with challenge and hope in a dimension beyond the touch and feel of daily earth-life yet emphasises stickability, self-discipline.

Prayer: Thank you that, as Christmas draws near again, it reminds me that You, God are the big Christmas Gift-giver!
