John 3: 31-35…..Who is the speaker here?

He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Comment: All scripture is there because God wills it. He expects us to be wise and trusting Him as we read it. Thus when we read that ‘Judas went out and hanged himself’, we are not expected to go and hang ourselves! Did John the Baptist continue on to say this or was it John, the writer, who had reflected, deeply and prayerfully on all this and offers his opinion? In summary

  • It is better to hear what God speaks than for us to try and create our own impression of what God is like.
  • There is here presented the Triune God, Father, Son and Spirit with Jesus given equal authority.
  • Life, Eternal Life, is totally and intimately related to belief in Jesus. The wrath of God is the alternative offered!

Prayer: I need Your help to wisely understand and act..
