Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth
Comment: Maybe I’m wrong but this talk of Jesus has a portion that people gladly hear and much of which raises hassles. i) The concept of the resurrection is often scoffed at when talking about Jesus but seems to be an almost universal hope when people think about being re-united with friends or loved ones who have died. ii) The thought of a continuing life of blessing in heaven is very hopeful and desirable but iii) the judgement of evildoers (and aren’t we all?) is not pleasant to hear. Jesus makes it quite clear that God, His Father, has made Him, Jesus, the future Judge. All ‘who are in tombs’ surely means the dead wherever they are. They all will be called to judgement which differentiates between the good and the doers of evil.
In this passage Jesus says that people might doubt what He is saying because He is talking about Himself. He will continue further later but here He says that John (the Baptist) has been heard by them and John was very clear in his presentation of Jesus as the Messiah, the Lamb of God. Jesus is the Loving Jesus but He here claims to be insightful Judging Jesus.
Prayer: Help me to stand on the side of truth, Lord Jesus.
