John 7: 20-24….What does work consist of?

The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it. Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well? Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

Comment: In the book of Exodus chapter 20 the Sabbath was clearly stated to be a non work day. There was not a lot of detail given but it was clearly a rest day. This Sabbath rule was one of the ten governing rules of how Israel was meant to behave, both in relationship to God and to his fellow humans. The leaders had added many conditions defining what ‘work’ meant. Referring back to His healing on a Sabbath, Jesus made them look at two situations. He infers that any intelligent person can see how illogical the situation is. i) To circumcise on a Sabbath wasn’t considered work. Circumcision wasn’t part of the Mosaic Law – God had instituted it with Abraham, ii) Healing someone was considered work and the last 6 of the ten commandments were all about treating your fellow man with love, care and respect. Surely ‘Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.‘ means ‘learn to think clearly with discernment‘!

Prayer: Thank You for the liberty that You bring into our lives, Lord Jesus
