2 Samuel 1: 23-27….The eulogy continues…

“Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely!
In life and in death they were not divided; Comment:
Jonathan could have turned against his father when Saul, in spite, planned to murder David. Jonathan helped his friend David escape but remained at his father’s side.
they were swifter than eagles;
they were stronger than lions. Comment:
exaggerations but they were mighty fighters!
“You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet,
who put ornaments of gold on your apparel. Comment:
Israel although wasting time with the Saul/David struggle was a time of prosperity.
“How the mighty have fallen
in the midst of the battle!
“Jonathan lies slain on your high places.
I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
very pleasant have you been to me;
your love to me was extraordinary,
surpassing the love of women. Comment:
I believe not a sexual reference but a comment on the depth of mate-ship!
“How the mighty have fallen,
and the weapons of war perished!”
Comment: David respected Saul as the God appointed leader of Israel. Twice he refused to kill him when he could have easily done so and, wrenching the crown, could have placed it on his own head. David slew the man, who thinking it would make him happy, brought David news of Saul’s death. But his relationship and feeling for Jonathan was at a much deeper level, Some people have tried to make their relationship out to be a homosexual one. David in some ways is a type of Jesus. The Bible’s teaching on homosexuality makes it impossible to imagine that God would make one, who is a type of the Messiah, a homosexual. The king was to be the first of the dynasty which led to Jesus..

Prayer: Thank You for relationships which enrich life so much!
