“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Comment: The disciples had every reason to be worried. Their Master, the One to Whom they had devoted the last three years of their lives, was under threat and one of their own group had gone to betray Him. And their Master was doing nothing to protect Himself! ‘Let not your hearts be troubled‘ must have halted them in their fear paths. ‘I’m going, I’m preparing, I’m coming back for you, so that you can be with Me’ Jesus said. I’m not sure how far ahead Thomas was thinking, possibly short term, but I do know that Jesus answered long term! And we have those beautiful words of Jesus when He tells the exclusivity of Himself! In Him is real Life, the Truth and He is the only way to God. And what’s more He said ‘when you get to know Me you to get to know Father God because He and I are totally in unity – see Me, see Him’! Philip wasn’t satisfied. He said ‘show us the Father God’. Jesus says in effect ‘Believe Me – I and He are ONE’. There is an element of choice in belief!
Prayer: Throughout my life, but particularly on this issue, help me to choose wisely, please.
