Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that “all of us possess knowledge.” This “knowledge” puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, he is known by God.
Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “an idol has no real existence,” and that “there is no God but one.” For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”— yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
Comment: Often in the past, if people were followers of a religion associated with idols they would kill their meat, offer it all to their idol, set some of it apart to be burnt or eaten by birds or animals and then enjoy the rest of the offered animal . They would pour onto the ground a small portion of what they were going to drink. Whatever was part of a meal they dedicated to their ‘god’. For those becoming Christian believers out of these situations you had to make a choice. In today’s quoted passage, Paul begins his instructions to these people by saying that be careful of ‘knowledge’. Here it means something like people thinking – ‘Well I know that idols don’t exist, no matter what others think I will in spite of what they are doing just enjoy my meal, There is only one God and I worship Him!’ About this person Paul says ‘he knows something; he does not yet know as he ought to know.‘ Many young or as yet immature Christians still thought that there were realities to idols. The first mentioned attitude (I know that there is only ONE GOD, so I can freely eat what I like) distressed these immature believers and certainly was not lovingly considerate but rather hurtful and divisive! So what should we do? Wait and see tomorrow or read ahead in your own Bible!
Prayer: Please help me to wise in the way I live amongst people. I pray keep me loving and faithful to You but wise and loving in what I do and say.
