Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
Comment: We tend to think that idol worship is a thing of the past. Not so! It is true that few shape a piece of wood or fashion a piece of metal, to which they bow down and pray. But an idol is perhaps best described as anything which is more important to you than God. The list of things which get placed before God is very long. Success, family, house-pride, sex, TV, sport – but I have no need to go on with the list for each of us can honestly think of things with which we have to have wrestle. And wrestle we should and let God win out by a very clear margin! Not that things don’t have their proper place but they must never be placed as items of devotion and for us to be bowing down to them! Good things can be used by the devil!
Communion isn’t some magic ceremony but the blood we drink, symbolised in wine, or the body of our Saviour which we eat, symbolized by bread, isn’t to be mixed with anything offered to the things which we tend to idolize.
Prayer: Please help me to be honest with myself and certainly be open to You. I would worship You alone.
