1 Corinthians 11: 17-22….A clear reprimand!

But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part, for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized. When you come together, it is not the Lord’s supper that you eat. For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk. What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not.

Comment: You will probably remember that much of this book is Paul answering or commenting upon issues raised by the church in Corinth. Someone has obviously written about what is happening when the church meets to share the Lord’s Supper. We know that it is called the ‘Eucharist’ or ‘Communion’ as well. We can’t read the comment or question sent to Paul, but obviously they practiced this very special supper as part of a self provided, but not communal, meal. Some brought a sumptuous basket and ate it without sharing. Obviously some brought strong drink and even got drunk! Others lived on scraps, and so could bring little or nothing, but rather had to sit and watch the wealthy enjoy themselves. It seems hard to believe if there was love and unity in the church. I can feel the sting of the disciplinary kick that Paul here gives them! Fortunately, as we see tomorrow, Paul goes on to show them a better way!

Prayer: Thank you Jesus that You are the Bread of Life and for shedding Your soul cleansing Blood.
