Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
Comment: Anybody can say ‘Jesus is LORD’. Colloquially we would say ‘but where was their tongue’ when they said it. What did the speaker really mean? These days Jesus is often cursed as sadly blasphemy is so common. And the Bible says ‘everyone is cursed who is hung on the tree’ and yet Jesus was crucified for our salvation. The passage is absolutely true as it puts real meaning into the words by saying ‘in the Spirit’.
Saying Jesus is LORD has real meaning – it marks a Christian from an unbeliever. But it doesn’t make all believers ‘clones’! For the sake of the church and God’s work on earth the Spirit gives many different gifts. Not all are preachers; some have special gifts like wisdom, exceptional faith and the list is continued above. ‘For the common good‘ surely means pride ‘out’, cooperation ‘in’! We are all to play our part as members of Christ’s Body on earth. Yet we all are expected to show the character described as the fruit of the Spirit! This can be summed up as Christlike character as expanded in Galatians 5 v22.
Prayer: I would have the rounded character that You ask for, and the Grace and Strength and Courage to use the ‘gift’ You have given me for the church’s sake!
