Ecclesiastes 11: 6-10….What does ‘vanity’ really mean?

6 In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good.
7 Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun.
8 So if a person lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; but let him remember that the days of darkness will be many. All that comes is vanity.
9 Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.
10 Remove vexation from your heart, and put away pain from your body, for youth and the dawn of life are vanity.

Comment: v6 seems to me an encouragement to have a good work ethic, but you can’t be sure that everything is going to work out as you planned.

vs 7&8 Seems to express that longevity is a blessing and since we live in a beautiful world enjoy it! But don’t forget that dark days will come when the sun doesn’t appear to be shining on you. Does vanity here mean that it will all, like a mist, be gone one day? Without saying it is Solomon is reminding us of what comes next? I think so because in v9 he reminds us of judgement!

vs 9&10 Swing to the other end of life, life in early years. ‘Your heart’ isn’t referring to cardiac status but the enthusiasm of youth! Look around you, spend your energy and enjoy life Solomon says. He adds the double warning – i) youthfulness is a mist which fades into middle and old age ii) You are going to be judged! I don’t think that he talks about judgment to be a ‘wet blanket’ but he is calling us to make wise choices!

Prayer: Thank you for the youth I enjoyed help me to remember You until my dying days!
