And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the statute of the Passover: no foreigner shall eat of it, but every slave that is bought for money may eat of it after you have circumcised him. No foreigner or hired worker may eat of it. 46 It shall be eaten in one house; you shall not take any of the flesh outside the house, and you shall not break any of its bones. All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. 48 If a stranger shall sojourn with you and would keep the Passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised. Then he may come near and keep it; he shall be as a native of the land. But no uncircumcised person shall eat of it. There shall be one law for the native and for the stranger who sojourns among you.”
All the people of Israel did just as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron. 51 And on that very day the LORD brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their hosts.
Comment: When reading a novel things don’t necessarily follow in sequence. Two chapters may tell different incidents which are occurring at the same time, or a chapter may flip back in time and tell you something that happened years ago. I sincerely doubt that while they were rushing away from Pharaoh and his troops that Moses and Aaron sat the people down and taught them the instructions which God gave them for how this Passover event was to be celebrated. The orders seem to highlight at least two things. i) Israel and ‘alien’ people were to be considered different. Passover was a ‘Jewish/Israeli’ only celebration. ii) Circumcision was to be definitely the mark of Jewishness. Jesus gave us ‘Communion’ as He was about to leave to be crucified during the Passover celebration. The church often teaches that ‘Communion’ is the Christian Passover, so are there lessons for us to learn from these instructions? Is there a ‘mark of Christians’ similar to circumcision? Is ‘baptism’ or is ‘evidence of loving oneness’ or is the ‘indwelling of the Holy Spirit’ in all believers to be considered as such? Should Communion be given to all present in a service where Communion is shared or are some to be considered as ‘aliens’ or ‘strangers’ if they don’t bear the ‘mark of Christianity’, whatever that is? Certainly different groups of Christians have different ideas on these issues!
Prayer: Help me to be led by Your Spirit as I face and think through these issues.
