“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Comment: What right to do we have to think about God in anthropomorphic terms? God is Spirit and Jesus told us to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. But God graciously came as a Man for those alive at that time to know and for us, by accurate records, to know what God would be like (and in fact was) if He were a man! God talked to Job directly. – I, personally, can only guess at how God conversed with Job. After all how He did it is unimportant, the fact that He did is the important thing! God explained that He was beyond Job’s wildest imaginings! (Job chs 39&40). In this passage we are told a few of the many things which the Holy Spirit does. But first He says that is to the believers advantage that He is going. Why is it advantageous? Consider what He was about to do and where He was about to go. As one Man He could be in only one spot; Ascended Jesus is our High Priest at the throne of his Father, as our Intercessor; The Holy Spirit is able to fill the Universe and be everywhere, and He is!
Jesus says that the Holy Spirit will have a work in the world. Jesus said the following. I have taken the liberty of numbering the points which Jesus made in this sentence. ‘he (the Holy Spirit) will 1. convict the world a) concerning sin and b) righteousness and c) judgment:’ and then Jesus goes on to explain why the Holy Spirit will do each of these things. The ultimate sin is not to believe in Jesus. Imputed Righteousness is a real possibilty for mankind as the ‘perfect Sacrifice ascends to the Father. Satan has been judged and overcome in that Jesus has conquered death which was the powerful hold which Satan held over mankind after Satan deceived our first parents.
As for Jesus followers – ‘He will guide you into all the truth‘ Sadly we don’t always follow the Guide!
Prayer: Please keep me and all Your people walking in Love and Obedience, following Your appointed Guide!
