Acts 2: 14-17,22-24,37&38….Peter must reply and he does – powerfully!

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:
17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams;……“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it……. 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Comment: You will remember that some, maybe many, accused the disciples of being drunk. They were under the control of the Holy Spirit. Peter stands up and declares this to be the truth, quoting the prophecy given by the OT prophet Joel. When once accused, by a high church official, of being too ‘evangelistic’ when I preached on repentance and forgiveness. I was told that wasn’t the way the church ran until after the Reformers. I was able to quote this story. The gospel affects all aspects of life but our repaired relationship with God pivots on us, individually repenting and believing! The Christian gospel is based on historical fact, we even have records dating back to the era. Some of these records are not ‘religion’ based but are in secular history! It is based on the fact that all people are out of a good relationship with God because all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. God has the recipe for restoring that relationship! Acts chapter 2 is worth reading in its entirity!

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus that You knock on the ‘door’ of our lives asking us to invite You in.
