Exodus 34: 18-24….More details of the Mosaic Covenant.

“You shall keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month Abib, for in the month Abib you came out from Egypt. All that open the womb are mine, all your male livestock, the firstborn of cow and sheep. The firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem. And none shall appear before me empty-handed. “Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest. In plowing time and in harvest you shall rest. You shall observe the Feast of Weeks, the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the year’s end. Three times in the year shall all your males appear before the LORD God, the God of Israel. For I will cast out nations before you and enlarge your borders; no one shall covet your land, when you go up to appear before the LORD your God three times in the year.

Comment: There are 3 Feasts mentioned here and all males are to appear annually before the Lord. I presume that that means after they have possessed the Promised Land and the people are dispersed to the ‘four corners’ of the Land. They are expected to attend the Tabernacle wherever it is erected and later to attend the temple – they are told that nobody should ‘ripoff’ another person’s property when they were away from their fields! The three appointed times correspond with Christian festivals. 1. The Feast of Unleavened Bread which celebrated the delivery of the people from slavery in Egypt – a lamb was slain and eaten by all the Israelis that day – this corresponds to the Christian – Good Friday/Easter period where the death of the Christ, the Lamb of God, was slain to deliver believers from the tyranny and consequences of sin. 2. The Feast of Weeks – which celebrated the giving of the Torah, the Mosaic Law, and the first fruits of the agricultural Harvest. It corresponds time wise to the Christian Pentecost – which signals our release by judgement through the Law and the gift of the Holy Spirit to allow us to live a life pleasing to God. 3. Feast of Ingathering which used to celebrated in the Christian community as Harvest Festival. We have so much for which to be thankful! In the middle, even in the midst of harvest celebrating the Sabbath is to be observed. We often don’t – to our detriment!

Proverbs 21: 30 No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the LORD.

Prayer: Thank You that You call us to frequent serious worship!
