Mark 5: 35-43….What other proofs does Mark offer?

Comment: Thinking back what has Mark suggested so far as proofs that Jesus is, as he claimed at the beginning, the Son of God? To list a few – John the Baptist fulfilled the prophecies as being the forerunner of the Messiah; Jesus was an amazing teacher, exceptional in fact; Jesus cured both those ill because of demon possession and physical illnesses (even leprosy); He could forgive sins; he introduced the gospel in His preaching; He was in control of nature (He stilled the storm. What is this second miracle of this particular day prove?

While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

Further comment: If you have visited around the world you will very possibly have heard the voluble weeping and wailing that accompanies a death. Death didn’t get hidden behind closed hospital doors with people secluded by curtains etc or in old aged homes. People died in their homes where every people of every age and neighbours and even strangers were involved. The sick daughter of this man, Jairus was dead! Why did Jesus say “The child is not dead but sleeping.” In order that people would laugh at Him! They knew about death, and having done this they were unable to later say that she wasn’t really dead! Mark tells us about this true miracle to prove that Jesus has power over life and death, – and this can be added to the comment which I wrote at the beginning!

Proverbs: 26-3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the back of fools. What do you use to convince those who don’t want to be convinced?

Prayer – Thank You Jesus for the true historical records of Your time living on earth!
