Psalm 45: 10-17….David had wives and concubines!

10 Hear, O daughter, and consider, and incline your ear:
forget your people and your father’s house,
11 and the king will desire your beauty.
Since he is your lord, bow to him.
12 The people of Tyre will seek your favor with gifts,
the richest of the people.
13 All glorious is the princess in her chamber, with robes interwoven with gold.
14 In many-colored robes she is led to the king,
with her virgin companions following behind her.
15 With joy and gladness they are led along
as they enter the palace of the king.
16 In place of your fathers shall be your sons;
you will make them princes in all the earth.
17 I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations;
therefore nations will praise you forever and ever.

Comment: David was a great king but even in his own day he was sexally morally NOT a great example! Yesterday I was indicating that this psalm written to praise David’s kingship was also a Messianic psalm. How does this ending to the psalm point beyond David to the promised Christ to come? Well it can be seen with a bit of thoughtful imagining. The followers of Jesus are called the Bride of Christ; This usage of the word has no sexual connotations even though in the Psalm as addressed to David it does no doubt! As people come from Tyre and the dress of the princess is described as being of many colours, the Bride of Christ is a Unity made up of many individuals of different races and colours! There are men in the Bride of Christ as well as women. Finally David is still a well known historical figure but the ending reads “I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations; therefore nations will praise you forever and ever.‘ I think that refers to the Messiah more than it does to David.

Proverbs 18: 24 – A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. – most of us have good friends but none are as faithful as having Jesus as both a ‘Brother’ and Friend!

Prayer: Thank You Jesus that You are my Brother and my Friend. But You are also my Saviour God!
