1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. – Saw surely means that God revealed the following to him.
2 It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it,
3 and many peoples shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. – I don’t think that this means that Mt Moriah/Zion on which Jerusalem is built will suddenly be higher than Mt Everest. It means that the God of the mount, Jehovah God, will be seen for who He is and people will seek Him for counsel! His people will also be purified and an excellent example of His workmanship!
4 He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. – Judgement isn’t a negative word! It can condemn but it also can give praise and honour where it is due! Very much like criticism can be destructive but can also produce very positive results!
5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD. – This was meant specifically for the Jewish nation and still does, But it would be great if the whole world, including you and me, listened!
6 For you have rejected your people, the house of Jacob, because they are full of things from the east and of fortune-tellers like the Philistines, and they strike hands with the children of foreigners. – how final is this rejection?
7 Their land is filled with silver and gold, and there is no end to their treasures; their land is filled with horses, and there is no end to their chariots.
8 Their land is filled with idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their own fingers have made. – True of Israel of that day and sadly of this! Though war is destroying their wealth!
9 So man is humbled, and each one is brought low— do not forgive them!
10 Enter into the rock and hide in the dust from before the terror of the LORD,
and from the splendor of his majesty. – for whom is the phrase ‘do not forgive them‘ meant? I expect that is a cry meaning ‘to let them go on in their present way leads only to destruction so we have the following sentence of today’s reading….
11 The haughty looks of man shall be brought low, and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled, and the LORD alone will be exalted in that day. – Amen, Lord!
Proverbs 28: 13: “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”
Prayer: Teach me, and help me to be honest with You, O God.
