Mark 12: 18-27….They won’t give up!

And Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection. And they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no offspring. And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died. In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.” Comment: In the past few days we have read of five different subgroups of the Jewish hierarchy coming to try and trap Jesus! This group, the Sadducees didn’t believe in an afterlife. Many people these days, not being Jews, could join the Sadducee party on this issue! They thought of a trick question which would, they thought, sent Jesus into a ‘spin’. One man, seven wives in a series without progeny, therefore not a sin as described in the Law – in fact obedience to the Law which stated in Deut 15: 5 – “If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.Lifting their sight from the practicalities of life down here to the afterlife, in which they didn’t believe, but they knew Jesus did, they thought that they had trapped Him.
Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong.”
Comment: Jesus’ answer is very enlightening. He says a) there is no marriage in heaven, which apparently/seems to, by the scriptural entitlement to be limiting sex to within marriage, and therefore ruling out sex in heaven. Thus making their question void! (cf islamic concepts are very opposite to this.) b) But Jesus stresses the point that God talking about dead people said that He was the God of the living. On the Mount of Transfiguration Jesus met with Moses and Elijah both of whom had been dead for years! Open your minds you, Sadducees!

Job 40: 1&2 – And the LORD said to Job: “Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.” Jesus, the speaker above, is God! Listen to Him!

Prayer: I would not argue with You, my God!
