Psalm 54: 1-7….An Appropriate Prayer

Comment: The Psalm heading refers to this passage from 1 Sam 23: 19 Then the Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah, saying, “Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hachilah, which is south of Jeshimon? 20 Now come down, O king, according to all your heart’s desire to come down, and our part shall be to surrender him into the king’s hand.” – I guess that David had spies who let him know what was going on. The initial Mossad!
Ps 54:1 O God, save me by your name,
and vindicate me by your might.
2 O God, hear my prayer;
give ear to the words of my mouth.
3 For strangers have risen against me;
ruthless men seek my life;
they do not set God before themselves.
– I guess that David was thinking of both the Ziphites and Saul as he wrote this! Selah
4 Behold, God is my helper;
the Lord is the upholder of my life.
– we need to hold onto God’s promises and allow situations to not cause us to doubt Him!
5 He will return the evil to my enemies;
in your faithfulness put an end to them.
6 With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you;
I will give thanks to your name, O LORD, for it is good.
– Thankfulness to God involves generosity and worship (sacrifice was worship under the Mosaic law)
7 For he has delivered me from every trouble,
and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies.
– I think that this was said in future Hope because of Past Experience. I fancy, that although written on parchment, or whatever, after the eventual victory over Saul, the prayer was immediately after David was given the information of the Ziphites betrayal through his spies!

Proverbs 3: 5-6 – Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Prayer: Help me to be, in my trust for You, like a child trusting his loving human father – but knowing that You are infinitely more dependable.
