35 And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.”’
David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.
Comment: Christianity is based on historical facts. If the ‘facts’ can be proven false then Christianity is also false! Yet it is not wrong to question issues and should be seriously thought about! Jesus says to the theologians of the day and the crowd “You say that the Christ, when He comes, will be David’s son (progeny). How come that David the first and great King at the beginning of the royal line of Jewish kings will call his great, great….great grandson – ‘Lord’?” Jesus stimulates their thinking further by saying ‘The Holy Spirit speaking through David has Jehovah God saying to David’s gr,gr,gr ….grandson “sit at right hand etc!” It’s as if Jesus is saying ‘Now, how do you explain that?’ The answer is that – Mary was in David’s line (as was Joseph) but He was born of an incarnation – the Father being God, the Holy Spirit.
38 And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces and have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
Comment: I suspect that a fair summary of these few verses would be ‘Beware heresy, it shows clearly in the hypocrisy of leaders!’
41 And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” Comment: I guess the temple cashiers would be very grateful for the large sums! And the rich should be generous measured against their own wealth! But God sees the real value of the gift as to what the giver has to begin with and knows what is left! God loves a cheerful giver.
Proverbs 11: 24-25 – One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered. – Is generosity a way of bringing blessing?
Prayer: Help me to avoid hypocrisy like the plague in the way I live, please Jesus!
