Luke 2: 21-33….Is there such a word as ‘overmorrow’?

Yes, there is such a word in old English. It has basically been replaced by ‘tomorrow’. I’m not certain if anybody uses it in this way, but I’m using it in the sense of ‘what comes next’!

21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
Comment: Jesus the Creator had become a helpless little baby boy, who cried to get attention, had to be washed and dressed and couldn’t do more than any other little child could do, except I suspect that his cry meant ‘need’ or ‘pain’ but as He grew up a bit never ‘frustrated anger’! We know that He was fully human, at the beginning immature but perfectly immature! And as a Jewish boy he underwent all the requirements of the Jewish Torah and was circumcised on the eighth day!
22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,
“Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace,
according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation
that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”
And his father and his mother marvelled at what was said about him.

Comment: Now we have two other typical events in the growing up of any Jewish boy (it was similar but different for girls)! Obviously the seven days before the circumcision on the eighth day the mother was considered unclean and I think that means not to touch holy things or to have sex. Then the circumcision was performed and she was given another 33 days when considered ‘unclean’. It is described in Leviticus 12 which is only 8 verses long if you wish to read more about it. Because every child was precious in the sight of God a sacrifice at the end of the period of “purification’, was required. An offering as described was brought, and by the variety offered in the law, it seems that the choice fitted the ability of the parents to provide the sacrifice! And as Jesus was Mary’s first born the Exodus 13: 2 command applied. “Consecrate to me all the firstborn. Whatever is the first to open the womb among the people of Israel, both of man and of beast, is mine.” Simeon was there and spoke words which must have staggered both Mary and Joseph and probably everyone within hearing! To save you looking above I copy his amazing prayer again here –“Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”

Proverbs 28: 4-5 Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law strive against them. Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the LORD understand it completely.

Prayer: Please write your law on my heart and mind, Lord Jesus.
