Luke 28: 5-9; 13-32 various verses….Surprised by Joy

Introduction: In cutting out lots of the chapter, I’m assuming that these are known stories to you! If they are not, and even if they are, I recommend that that you get a Bible and open up and read at least Luke chapter 28.

5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest……. 13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” …….“Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, and when they did not find his body, …… he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself……..And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him……“Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”

Comment: Or really a question, ‘Have you ever met Jesus?’ I know that it is not normally possible to meet Him and shake hands with Him, but there are other ways to meet Him! I met Him in reality by a mixture of seeking Him and Him finding me. What on earth am I talking about? I heard about Him in Sunday School; I saw Him in a dairy farmer, whose quality of living made me want whatever/Whoever made the difference to him and his family; Jesus met me and entered my life through the voice of a preacher at a Youth for Christ rally; I meet Him daily as I read the Bible; I have had dreams about Him, but more commonly He speaks as I pray or sometimes by my conscience or a strong impulse to do something ‘good’ that I wouldn’t normally do. And I don’t understand the Trinity completely but I know that I sang, meaning every word, “Into my heart, into my heart, Come into my heart, Lord Jesus; Come in today, come in to stay, Come into my heart, Lord Jesus. Come into my heart, O Lord Jesus, I need Thee through life’s dreary way; The burden of sin is so heavy, Come into my heart to stay.” and He has come – according to His word and to my experience the Holy Spirit has come in and now I am, by His Grace, His! His child, His follower; my relationship with the Triune God broken by rebellion both Adam’s and mine has been forgiven! Millions would gladly give similar but personal (to them) testimonies. Have you met Jesus?

Romans 8: 9-11 – You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

Prayer: Thank You that although unseen within our world, Your glorious actions are personally experienced and visible to our friends.
