Proverbs 4: 10-19

Hear, my son, and accept my words,
that the years of your life may be many.
I have taught you the way of wisdom;
I have led you in the paths of uprightness.

When you walk, your step will not be hampered,
and if you run, you will not stumble.
Keep hold of instruction; do not let go;
guard her, for she is your life.

Do not enter the path of the wicked,
and do not walk in the way of the evil.
Avoid it; do not go on it;
turn away from it and pass on.
For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong;
they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble.
For they eat the bread of wickedness
and drink the wine of violence.

But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,
which shines brighter and brighter until full day.
The way of the wicked is like deep darkness;
they do not know over what they stumble.

Solomon says if you listened and understood what I said yesterday you are on the right path. I think that if I had been his son sitting at his feet by now I’d have been saying haven’t you got anything else to teach me! You keep going over the same thing again and again! No doubt he have would told me not to be disrespectful or he’d disinherit me or something even worse. But I guess that I have to acknowledge that what he says makes sense, and if I’m honest learning a good habit takes a long time, even a life time.
So he just goes on – Don’t unlearn my lessons and you will be able to walk and even run through life without stumbling.
But temptation is real – don’t give into it. Evil companions really mess up your life. You have to remember the past and live in what you’ve learnt to be right.
You’ve started on the lighted way don’t wander into the shadows which soon become pitch blackness! Keep on the right way and the dim light of dawn will become midday brightness.
To repeat – it is so hard to learn good habits and it seems so easy to learn bad ones!

Prayer: Lord, make me teachable and help me to choose aright!
