Luke 12: 22-34… It sounds too good to be true!

And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you.
“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Comment: Wow, that sounds like an extremely politically left policy statement! Stand back and expect God or an agent of His to provide you with good meals, cleanly washed and pressed clothes, and possibly there will be a valet or maid to dress you? You’ll never have to work again! It sounds too good to be true!

  • God feeds the birds, and you’re more important than them.
  • Field flowers, which last only a day or two, look smarter than the best dressed socialite.
  • Worry doesn’t give you a longer life, so why worry – let God look after you..
  • (I’m not sure how you’ll get things to use but – instead you can look after the needy and build up your bank account for the after life.

As I’ve put it there, and I’ve faithfully used the contents of this Lucan passage, it seems ridiculous. Mis-explained like that it is ridiculous! But you can use exactly the same words and examples and find the answer to handling the worries of life. Remember here Jesus is speaking about the God who has made you not to be so fixed on the body aspects of life but rather on being His servant. You can trust Him, so anxiety is out and walking, trusting Him enables you to produce a morally sound life here and treasures in the life beyond. ‘Moral’ has many more connotations beyond sexual ones and that is how I am using it here. God is on your side, if you are on His side, so trust Him, and get on with real purpose of living – loving your neighbour and being rich towards God!

Prayer: Let me not read words shallowly but open the eyes of my understanding as I peruse these passages and cleanse my life of past wrong attitudes, prejudices, and sin and guide me into a better future, please!

  1. That reminds me of the old song we used to sing. “Why worry, when you can pray. Trust Jesus, He’ll be your stay. Don’t be a doubting Thomas, rest fully on His promise, why worry, worry, worry, worry, when you can pray.”
