And Saul’s servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, “Does it seem to you a little thing to become the king’s son-in-law, since I am a poor man and have no reputation?” And the servants of Saul told him, “Thus and so did David speak.” Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no bride-price except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged of the king’s enemies.’” Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.
Comment: How do you circumcise a whale? You send down four skin divers! Well what Saul asks of David seems even much more dangerous than being involved in that! David again acknowledges that he is not worthy of the king’s daughter in marriage but pressed by Saul’s servants enquired what the bride price asked would be. What was asked couldn’t be bought with money but was in Saul’s mind going to be a fatal challenge to the soldier David. 100 adult male Philistines were not going to give up their foreskins without a fierce fight.
Prayer: Deliver me from all the evil thoughts, like Saul’s, that cross my mind, O God, before I put them into action.
Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. I thought the story about the four skin whalers was very good. Once again, the devil has been in Saul’s mind giving him evil thoughts and plans. It is in the mind where everything is plotted. It can be plots for good, or plots for evil. As the Book of James says in chapter 4:1-6. “But what about the feuds and struggles that exist among you-where do you suppose they come from? Can’t you see that they arise from conflicting passions within you? You crave for something and don’t get it; you are murderously jealous of what others have got and which you can’t possess yourselves;” and so James goes on. So as Christians we need to have the mind of Christ. God bless you.
