When Saul returned from following the Philistines, he was told, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.” Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Wildgoats’ Rocks. And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where there was a cave, and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost parts of the cave. And the men of David said to him, “Here is the day of which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’” Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. And afterward David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. He said to his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the LORD’S anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the LORD’S anointed.” So David persuaded his men with these words and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way.
Comment: The Philistines dealt with (yesterday’s ending) Saul is back on the hunt for his enemy young David. This is a fascinating, intriguing story. A call of nature takes Saul into the very cave where David and his men are hiding. I can see Saul seated relieving himself with his cloak thrown away beside him and David edging up and snipping off a bit of the coat. It seems as if Saul didn’t notice the loss of a bit of his coat because he just gets up and relieved goes out to continue his hunt. David and his men silently stay in the depths of this obviously large cave. The men even get to whisper quietly with David! Saul alone would have been an easy target!
Prayer: Let me act foolishly if I really believe that it is Your will, O God.

Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. I can remember hearing this story many, many years ago when I was going to Sunday School. But of course, it was never inferred why Saul really needed to go into the cave. But even so, on his own, Saul was a target, and David and his mean could easily have killed him. But David honoured the fact that Saul was the Lord’s anointed King, and he knew that this was not an opportunity to do him any harm. God bless you.
