And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. And he said to them, “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables, so that
“‘they may indeed see but not perceive,
and may indeed hear but not understand,
lest they should turn and be forgiven.’”
Comment: There are books written about Jesus and His parables. He taught in many different ways, which I won’t go into today but if you just think for a moment He taught by referring to OT passages (when He said that he would be dead for 3 days like Jonah in the belly of the whale); by extreme challenges (calling the Pharisees liars or children of the devil their father) etc. But in this short passage, concerning parables, He simply says so that the understanding (those to whom has been given the secret of the Kingdom of God) will learn and the non-understanding won’t have a clue what His parables are about. So it seems as if He is saying that parables are there to confuse some. I have tried to teach Maths to students and it is true that some have it and some don’t! The Bible does refer to ‘believers in Jesus’ as ‘the chosen’.
At any rate, as we will see tomorrow, Jesus goes onto explain the meaning of this parable.
Prayer: Enlighten my eyes, please, to see and understand in an ever increasing way Your teaching, Lord Jesus.

Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. 1 Cor.1:18 For the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Also 1Cor.2:14 The man without the Spirit of God does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God for they are foolishness to him and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
