And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you. For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”
Comment: Why would you even think of putting the lamp under a cover except if you didn’t want to see how dirty the place was? Maybe you would put it under the bed if you were searching for some thing, maybe hidden or lost or just put out of the way? The inference of the parable is put it where everything can be examined.
The parables are to teach us about the kingdom of God. What do we envisage the light meaning? Truth? Judgement? Jesus said ‘I am the light of the world!’ The second follows on easily if we think of the above as meaning that nothing can or will be hidden from God! You cheat and you’ll surely be found out. The example given is to make sure you give a person what they have paid for and are due!
Prayer: Help me to understand and learn from Your words, Lord Jesus.
Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. Light is an important part of our every day life. “The light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it.” John 1:3. It is interesting that light can overcome darkness, but darkness can never overcome light. Even a tiny light will shine in the darkness. It reminds me of an old song we learned in SS many years ago. “Jesus bids us shine with a clear pure light, like a little candle burning in the night.” God bless you.
