Mark 5: 15-20…..What would you expect?

And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marvelled.

Comment: The townsfolk arrive to see a miraculously healed man. They knew what he had been like; they can see the remarkable cure and difference. We have to think about why their response was to beg Jesus to go. I think that they were probably glad that the nuisance man was healed, but they did not like the loss of their herd of pigs. They did not want Jesus to disrupt their lives any more! They sent away the Messiah, the Son of God. Did they made the wrong choice?

The healed man became ‘an evangelist’ to Decapolis, spreading the news of Jesus.

Prayer: Help me to make right choices, please, O Father God.

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments. It is interesting to think about the fact that the people who saw the demon-possessed man clothed and in his right mind after Jesus had healed him, asked Jesus to go away. The whole thing was too much for them, and as you said, the loss of the pigs would have been devastating to those who were making their money from raising the pigs. It comes down to priorities. Who or what is most important in life? Jesus, or making money? God bless you.
