Thus says the LORD,
“Though they are at full strength and many,
they will be cut down and pass away.
Though I have afflicted you,
I will afflict you no more.
And now I will break his yoke from off you
and will burst your bonds apart.”
The LORD has given commandment about you:
“No more shall your name be perpetuated;
from the house of your gods I will cut off
the carved image and the metal image.
I will make your grave, for you are vile.”
Behold, upon the mountains, the feet of him
who brings good news,
who publishes peace!
Keep your feasts, O Judah;
fulfill your vows,
for never again shall the worthless pass through you;
he is utterly cut off.
Comment: God tells the Jews that their enemy are defeated! He challenges them to worship aright because He has given them the victory. Presumably the famous of the enemy are to be buried, their gods destroyed. They will not have a lineage into the future. (Although Nineveh was destroyed it has been rebuilt and exists with a different name – Mosul. That is why I think this part refers to the leaders of the attack against Judah.)
The phrase ‘the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace!”‘ is written in the NT book of Romans. This makes me wonder if maybe there is a ‘hidden’ reference to the final answer which God is to provide later for His people in Jesus.
Prayer: Use my feet to spread Your word as You choose, O God.
Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. One cannot read and understand this passage without knowing the background about who God is and what He desires of His own people, Israel. We need to be taught the whole Scriptures, and understand the whole will and Word of God. We definitely need to be taught His Word by His Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth. God bless you.
