Psalm 5: 7-12….In light of the preceding…

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
will enter your house.
I will bow down toward your holy temple
in the fear of you.
Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness
because of my enemies;
make your way straight before me.
For there is no truth in their mouth;
their inmost self is destruction;
their throat is an open grave;
they flatter with their tongue.
Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them fall by their own counsels;
because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.
But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;

let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name may exult in you.
For you bless the righteous, O LORD;
you cover him with favour as with a shield.

Comment: Yesterday we read that as David came before God in prayer he was very conscious of God’s attitude to evil. Yet in the light of of God’s steadfast love, he dares to come knowing that as he mixes fear with trust he is welcome in God’s house. He prays for God to lay out the right path which he is to walk.

The next bit reads initially as if David is being vindictive. No, rather he is pleading that God will deliver him from his enemies as they seek to destroy him. And not only are they after him, but they have rebelled against God.

At the end he cries out in thankfulness that all who trust in God have a right to rejoice because of His protection. The use of the word ‘all’, takes us back to yesterday’s portion of Psalm 5, and that God offers the benefits of His Son’s sacrifice to all who will turn to Him. Remember David could call himself ‘righteous’ only because he was forgiven.

Prayer: Help me to realize that submission to You, makes me a truly real person!

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. It is most interesting that when we submit to the Lord, and obey Him, we find freedom. The freedom we find enables us to serve the Lord, and follow Him, knowing that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life, and without Him we can do nothing. The way of following Jesus turns everything upside down in relation to what the world thinks. God bless you.
