John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. For the one who is not against us is for us. For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.
Comment: What do you get out of this very brief story? At least I see the following:
- Don’t jump to conclusions about others’ motives. We’re not called to be gullible, but…
- Mighty works done in Jesus’ Name are significant, and even the doer of them is not likely to forget the lessons learnt. They won’t easily turn on the One in whose Name they have done great things.
- God sees behind and understands little actions. And here the actions done because of regard for the Person Jesus is high-lighted. Even if done for His sake to His followers. God is glad to hand out rewards!
NB I welcome comments and questions!
Prayer: Thank You that You taught so clearly, Jesus!
Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. We do not know the motives of a person who preaches God’s Word. Only God sees into each heart and knows what is happening. We need to look to God and seek to follow Him and serve Him in the way He desires. God will be the Judge of all we do. God bless you.
