And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again. And again, as was his custom, he taught them.
And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
Comment: Sexual urges start early for most people – of both sexes. If God is the Creator then He put them there and properly handled they are good. At the beginning God laid down the relationship which was called marriage and in many places in both the old and new testaments has clearly defined His attitude to the related words – marriage, adultery, fornication, homosexuality etc. Here in an attempt to catch Jesus out the Pharisees raise the question of divorce. Because divorce and broken marriages occur and Moses had had something to say on the matter, they challenge Jesus to see how/if He could handle their purposefully loaded question.
Jesus answer was to repeat God’s command for what marriage is meant to be and justifies Moses comment on this by the sinfulness of mankind. But the original statement from the time of Creation stands as God’s choice in the matter.
