Mark 10: 23-27……What does this mean for me?

And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”

Comment: I guess that if you dissolved a camel in some type of acid you could shoot it through the eye of a needle! But here the ‘eye of a needle’ probably means the small gate in the main city gates so that after everything was locked up city wise for the night late arrivals could be allowed in. But the small gate made it very difficult for a large camel. Why is it harder for a rich man than anyone else to enter the kingdom of God is a question that needs pondering. I think that wealth is a hard idol to convince people to stop worshipping. There is personal choice involved but the Spirit of God can do the impossible. But God does not allow an idol to sit on the throne of our lives as well as Himself. Thus the choice must be made.

Prayer: Help me, O Lord as I seek to enthrone You alone in my life.

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. It reminded me of Jesus’ words in Matt.6:24. “No one can be loyal to two masters. He is bound to hate one and love the other, or support one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and the power of money at the same time.” (JB Phillips translation). God bless you.
