Psalm 18: 46-50…..A ‘Summing-up’!

The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock,
and exalted be the God of my salvation—
the God who gave me vengeance
and subdued peoples under me,
who rescued me from my enemies;
yes, you exalted me above those who rose against me;
you delivered me from the man of violence.
For this I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations,
and sing to your name.
Great salvation he brings to his king,
and shows steadfast love to his anointed,
to David and his offspring forever.

Comment: The summing-up in the last few verses of this reasonably long psalm highlights a couple of things. Firstly – God is central in David’s life and David is thankful, full of gratitude and praise for his victory-giving God. Secondly – this is an episode in the ongoing plan and purpose of God, in His steadfast love, to fulfill His promise to provide a king to sit on David’s throne forever. Of course the skeptic can say that many of David’s descendants were rotters through and through. But we must never forget that Jesus, in direct line from David, genetically through Mary, legally through Joseph, having risen from the dead, ascended into heaven and is now seated at the right hand of God. And He bears the title ‘King of kings and Lord of lords’.

Prayer: Your plan for the future is seen in Your working through David and many others. Thank You that we live post Jesus and see much more of Your ways of working things out than David could. We live in hope of one day seeing the plan brought to completion.

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments on this Psalm. We can thank God that we have the writings of David, from many hundreds of years ago. How blessed we are to have these precious Scriptures to read, to ponder over, and to gain much wisdom from. May God’s Holy Spirit continue to lead and guide many who search the Word of God for truth, wisdom, righteousness and guidance. God bless you.
