And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet.”’
David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.
And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces and have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at feasts, who devour widows’ houses and for a pretence make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
Comment: Being a follower of Christ is not to be unthinking. The first bit of the above seems to be a riddle. A riddle to make the hearers ask ‘How consistent is my position on Who the Messiah really is to be?’ Remember this question was to Jews who already had a preconceived answer in their minds.
- The Jewish Scriptures taught that the promised Messiah/Christ was to be a descendant of King David. And certainly the Jews wanted a warrior, reigning Messiah/King after the character of David.
- Quoting Ps 110, David calls God, LORD. He says that God says to the coming Messiah ‘Lord’. Why would God call the Messiah the same name as the word for God? Seems a reasonable question!
- And added to that as the Messiah was to descend from David why would the ancient revered king, progenitor of the Messiah call Him, my Lord? Why not ‘my son’?
So we need to think deeply to get to the basic truth and then there is a little glimpse exposing false religion for what it is – pretentious rubbish.
Prayer: There is always more for me to learn, O God. Help me to study honestly Your Word.
