Mark 13: 1-4….Time for a serious discussion!

And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
(Signs of the End of the Age)
And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?”

Comment: Yesterday we saw the hugeness of the small, smallest coin, offering of the widow’s mite. But as they walk out from the temple the disciples eyes are caught by the glimmering brightness of the magnificent temple, which meant so much to them and all Jewry. Seeing into the future, and not that too distant future Jesus told them of the total destruction soon to come to what was the centre of Jewish religion and worship. They, distressing as it must have been in their ears heard His words, and were listening for His answer! His answer took the rest of the chapter and had many subdivisions. We’ll start on them tomorrow!

Prayer: Help me to listen carefully and trustingly to what You say about the future, for I know that the present will lead into the future..

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. The widow’s offering, in the eyes of humans, is something we need to consider thoughtfully. But we humans are distracted by the splendour of buildings, and other such man-made objects, that the special meaning behind Jesus’ comments regarding the widow’s offering of her all, goes over our heads. We humans just don’t understand the lessons Jesus is teaching day by day. We need to focus on Him, and not be distracted by things around us. God bless you.
