Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said,
“This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”
Comment: I have no idea why the first man (Adam) called them what he did. And, although some may spend a lifetime trying to work it out, what he called them is no longer what we call them – did he say camel or chameau of gimel or … well Hebrew and Aramaic – the Bible languages – even use a different script. It must have been a fascinating but exhausting time! Then he has a God-given anaesthetic and surgery by his Creator ending up with a quick recovery and he names ‘her’ with a play on words on the word ‘man’, ‘woman’. It sounds almost unbelievable and extra-ordinarily fantastic. But the truth of it, possibly hidden in a language style, ends up with the a true situation. A perfectly made man and a perfectly made woman who can function successfully together like the not ‘climb from slime’ explanations which, as a surgeon, I see remarkably false – it doesn’t make sense. We know that any small deficiency in structure or function so easily spells failure. If Adam had had sex with one of the other perfectly made primates, scientifically we know nothing would have been born!
Prayer: Help me to get through the endless questioning and to come to simply be able to trust You as the Creator and the Bible as Your Word.
