When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Comment: We are now 50 days after the passover for the Jews and Easter for the Christians. Jesus had gone up into heaven. He told His followers to wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit came upon them. At this feast time (harvest thanksgiving and a time for remembering the law as given to Moses) all males were strongly encouraged to be in Jerusalem – and there was a huge crowd there. The Christians, no doubt for mutual support and mixed with some fear as to what the Jews might do to them were all in one spot. I think that we often fail to see the drama of the moment. A tornado type local wind associated with leaping fire filled the room where the Christians were. Jesus at His birth had an angelic choir singing. The Holy Spirit when He came had an enormous display of almost uncontrolled power. They had been told that they were to be, after the Spirit came, witnesses to the end of the world. The first thing that happened was that they were given a gift of being able to speak so that all who were around could understand them. But that is for tomorrow!
Prayer: Thank You that this is neither fable nor myth but Your plan to make Your followers effective!
