And to Adam he said,
“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
and have eaten of the tree
of which I commanded you,
‘You shall not eat of it,’
cursed is the ground because of you;
in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
and you shall eat the plants of the field.
By the sweat of your face
you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
for out of it you were taken;
for you are dust,
and to dust you shall return.”
Command: What is God’s accusation to Adam? Surely it basically was that God had directly given him the command, and Adam, listening to his wife, had chosen to do her will above God’s command. Then God says that your sin (for disobeying God is the root of sin) will have a wide effect in nature. The pleasure of living in the garden of Eden is swapped for a sweaty brow, dirty hands and hard labour working in a weed ridden field. And the threat of death, which has already been seen in a destroyed relationship with his Creator, will eventually be seen in physical death and decay of his body.
Prayer: My past is not perfect but I thank You that You are a forgiving God if we listen to You.
