Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me;
fight against those who fight against me!
Take hold of shield and buckler
and rise for my help!
Draw the spear and javelin
against my pursuers!
Say to my soul,
“I am your salvation!”
Let them be put to shame and dishonour
who seek after my life!
Let them be turned back and disappointed
who devise evil against me!
Let them be like chaff before the wind,
with the angel of the LORD driving them away!
Let their way be dark and slippery,
with the angel of the LORD pursuing them!
Comment: How does this psalm square with the concept of loving your enemies and doing good to them? Is there such a thing as a ‘just war’? There are a lot of issues which are not easy for us to answer. For example God is in control but we are responsible for the choices we make. How do you hold in a perfect balance ‘predestination’ and ‘free will’? As we look at the rest of the psalm over the next couple of days we will have cause to think deeply about this. Life isn’t always a bed of rose petals – sometimes we lie on the thorns.
Prayer: I need wisdom greater than my own, O Lord. Please infuse me with the wisdom that I need.
