Acts 5: 26-33…. Gently, gently!

Then the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.
And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, saying, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.” But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Saviour, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.

Comment: In the Western calendar today is called ‘Boxing Day’, going back to the time when the church encouraged the well off to give boxes of goodies to their servants and the poor. Well the Jewish leaders have a problem as to how to ‘box up’ and conclude the problem with these troublesome Jesus folk. They desired to kill them as they had killed Jesus but what was happening in the community in the Name of Jesus was truly ‘good’ and very popular with the common folk. The apostles didn’t ‘give an inch’, but clearly declared their intention to be true to the Lord Jesus, their Risen Saviour. The Jewish leaders expected the apostles to be craven and frightened but they were made strong by the indwelling Holy Spirit! The leaders were full of anger and set on issuing a death sentence, but let’s see what eventuates tomorrow.

Prayer: Help me to be gracious but clear as I witness for You, my Lord.
