Genesis 16: 12-16… Who would want to be labelled a ‘wild donkey of a man’?

You may remember that the Angel of the Lord met with Hagar, expelled from Abram’s household and sitting near a pool of water. Ishmael was to become her son’s name.

He shall be a wild donkey of a man,
his hand against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.”
So she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.” Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered.
And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

Comment: I wonder if the description ‘wild donkey’ given to what the son would be like as a man made her wonder about what a handful he would be as a child and a teenager? Does ‘wild donkey’ infer uncontrollable and obtuse? As a slave herself returning to a disgruntled mistress he probably would be her responsibility entirely. ‘You are a ‘God of seeing’ she names God and she calls the water where she was found ‘Beer-lahai-roi’ which means ‘the well of the Living One who sees me’.

Prayer: Please give me strength for whatever faces me day by day.
