Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.
Comment: I’m bamboozled! Why does this bit appear here? As John has recorded, Jesus, before His birth in Bethlehem, was the Creator and Sustainer of life. He then became the One through Whom people estranged from God might be called ‘children of God’ if they believed in Him. He then performs a miracle, which people liked, before going to the temple on an important day and throws His weight around straightening out their false ways and apparently gets a very favourable hearing. Then we have this statement ‘Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.‘ Is John saying to his readers ‘You need to think things through, a superficial quick assessment isn’t enough – Jesus reads your heart?’ And John, the author is going to give us much weighty stuff which Jesus has taught and highlighted.
Prayer: Teach me to get Your real meaning(s) LORD.
