Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
Comment: Nicodemus is called a ruler of the Jews. Later in John’s Gospel he is labelled as one of the Sanhedrin, the ruling power base of the Jews, and helped at Jesus burial. Presumably he was one of those who noticed Jesus and his behaviour and heard His teaching during the previously mentioned Passover Feast. He was impressed by what he heard and saw and, unless he is talking with a forked tongue, God as some how being involved!
Jesus uses the phrase being ‘born again’ as a pre-requisite of seeing the ‘kingdom of God’. Was Nicodemus playing dumb or maybe being provocative by referring to an adult climbing back into his mother’s uterus? I think that he was saying ‘explain yourself Jesus!’
Prayer: I want to understand also, Jesus.
Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage from John 3:1-4 about Nicodemus. I found it most helpful and refreshing to reflect upon. God bless you.

I have heard people say that Nicodemus was frightened that his contemporaries might judge him for going to Jesus and thus he came when no one would know that he went. I think that unlikely and i am prepared to give Nicodemus the benifit of the doubt. It does lead onto some of Jesus beautiful explanation. Thank you for commenting. Have a great Christmas season.
