2Samuel 5:1-6….David’s reign established.

Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, we are your bone and flesh. In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the LORD said to you, You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over Israel.’” So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.
And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who said to David, “You will not come in here, but the blind and the lame will ward you off”—thinking, “David cannot come in here.”

Summary: Hebron was David’s capital city when he was king only over Judah and a few others. When the rest of Israel after the death of Ish-bosheth decided to have David as their king they came to him. Their speech seems to recognize that God had anointed David, under Samuel’s hand, as His choice for King. Certainly that is the way that the Bible presents the hierarchical line of Kings in God’s plan – until the eternal King Jesus came onto the scene. David obviously saw the unconquered city of Jerusalem as a more appropriate place for his capital. The Jebusites, a Canaanite tribe, under whose control the city was, mocked David and his inability to take it from them!

Prayer: Help me to make wise decisions as to what I do and what I attempt, O Lord.

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. I find it interesting to look back at David the shepherd boy, who around the age of seventeen, was anointed by the Prophet Samuel to become King. But it certainly wasn’t smooth sailing for David because it wasn’t until he was thirty that he actually was anointed and became the King. So for thirteen years, he was chased by King Saul, and fought and won many battles and became very famous as a conquering hero. But in the end, with Mephibosheth being murdered, the way became possible for him to be crowned as King. There were many lessons which David learned along the way which prepared him for this moment. God bless you.

    1. Maybe we don’t get theology in every story but it points to God’s faithfulness and forwards to Christ! Thanks for commenting! BLH
