1 Hear my cry, O God,
listen to my prayer;
2 from the end of the earth I call to you
when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock
that is higher than I, Comment: why a rock? and why higher than himself? As a soldier of his day he could hide from his enemy behind such a rock or in a cleft if there was one in the rock; He could shelter from storms; A beautiful concept, and there is a thought of strength and stability
3 for you have been my refuge,
a strong tower against the enemy.
4 Let me dwell in your tent forever!
Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings! Selah Comment: The shelter of God’s wings is even better than a rock. And there is a strong hint of eternity here, and for him to be forever in God’s tent!
5 For you, O God, have heard my vows;
you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.
6 Prolong the life of the king;
may his years endure to all generations!
7 May he be enthroned forever before God;
appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him! Comment: David was no fool and knew that he would eventually die. But God had promised to establish his Kingdom forever. He remembers that promise – Easter wasn’t long ago and we know the story of David’s descendant in the flesh through Mary, of Jesus the King, who now is eternally throned on the right of God, His Father!
8 So will I ever sing praises to your name,
as I perform my vows day after day. Comment: And may we all say Amen!
Prayer: Thank You for the Psalms which teach us so much of the life of Your people of old, but rings true for us today!
